UPDATE (WFXR) – Hunter Long III has been taken into custody without incident, according to Danville Police, after he escaped from the Southern Virginia Mental Health Institute on December 13.
Long was caught by officers on West Main Street near the Dollar General, said a release from Danville Police.
The incident remains under investigation, and DPD says it appreciates the public’s help in finding Long after getting several tips regarding his whereabouts.

DANVILLE, Va. (WFXR) – Danville Police are asking for public assistance in searching for a patient who escaped from the Southern Virginia Mental Health Institute on December 13.
DPD said that around 3:55 p.m. on Friday, 22-year-old Hunter Bryce Long III escaped from the Southern Virginia Mental Health Institute on Taylor Drive. Officers said Long was last seen wearing a white t-shirt and royal blue sweatshirt, gray sweatpants with SVMHI written on the side, and black shoes.
Long was charged after allegedly assaulting a Danville Police officer on November 6, 2024, police said.
Danville Police said Long should be considered dangerous; however, it is currently unknown if he is armed. If you encounter Long, do not approach him and call 911 immediately.
