UPDATE 1/14 11:10 A.M. COVINGTON, Va. (WFXR) – The Alleghany County Sheriff’s Office has commented on the evacuation of Covington Middle School.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, a gas leak was detected during construction near the school. However, at this time no students are in danger.
As a precaution, immediate action was taken to ensure the safety of students and staff. Students were transported to Clifton Academy until they can return to CMS.
Law enforcement is asking people to refrain from calling the school or local police as phone lines are very busy.
The school will dismiss early due to ongoing utility work. Even though the school is safe, they are taking precautionary measures.
Parents can pick up their children at the Clifton Academy now, and staff will be onsite to help with dismissal. Buses will be available and dismissed at 1:30 p.m.

COVINGTON, Va. (WFXR) – On Tuesday, January 14, Covington Middle School has announced that due to a situation with a natural gas line, staff and students are being temporarily relocated.
Students are being relocated to Clifton Academy in Low Moor.
School officials said they are in contact with the Covington City Officials and working to resolve the situation as soon as possible.
