City of Roanoke adopts next generation technology for 911 services



ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) – The City of Roanoke is working to elevate emergency resources with new technology and reshaping how emergency calls are handled.

The next generation of 911 Emergency Services Internet Protocol Network (NG911 ESInet) will allow more of a digital era, ensuring faster, more accurate, and more reliable resources for residents who are in need.

The backbone of Roanoke’s emergency communications services includes the ESInet system to build on a secure, high-speed digital network. This will also allow for more voice and text calls when emergencies occur.

“Our goal is to ensure the 911 Center manages every call with the utmost precision and care,” said Sonya Roman, Manager of the City of Roanoke 911 Center. “Roanoke City is always on the forefront of technology, and the NextGen 911 system reflects our commitment to leveraging the best tools available.”

Roanoke is one of the municipalities nationwide using the system to improve call transfers and data sharing. It also ensures that the emergency responders in the city are equipped to meet demands in the evolving digital world.

This new adoption will ensure residents that Roanoke’s 911 Center is more than prepared when answering calls.
