Centra’s modernization update outlines facility improvements & future investments

LYNCHBURG, Va. (WFXR) – Centra announced a multi-year modernization plan back in March of 2023 to address the needs of the community based on findings from the 2021 Community Health Needs assessment.

After the 2023 announcement, progress has been made on the Centra Medical Center and Centra Simons Run Medical Campus along with the parking lot and wayfinding work at the Centra Lynchburg General Hospital.

Here are the updates from each location.

Centra Langhorne Medical Center:

Construction of the Medical Center has been started since the groundbreaking in March of 2024. The five-story medical office building is located at the intersection of Langhorne Road and Tate Springs Road. This building will offer the Lynchburg community centralized access to diverse healthcare systems which supports Centra’s idea of improving health care. The facility is expected to open at full capacity by the fall of 2025.

Centra Simons Run Medical Campus:

The campus is set to open in 2026 with the hope of expanding specialized behavioral health and rehabilitation services. Centra and Lifepoint Health affiliates from Lifepoint Behavioral Health and Lifepoint Rehabilitation are working together on the project.

The campus will have two state-of-the-art hospitals:

Centra Behavioral Health Hospital: This hospital will be a 72-bed facility with 75,000 square feet to offer patients with mental health needs a safe and therapeutic environment. It will also provide inpatient and outpatient services with open community spaces, courtyards, and clinical areas to enhance the overall patient and family experience.

Centra Rehabilitation Hospital: This will be a 50-bed facility for patients in need of physical therapy and rehabilitation for brain and spinal cord injuries. There will be therapy gyms and outdoor spaces for patients along with a secure unit for patients with brain injuries to support a safe recovery.

In the third quarter of 2024, construction began on both hospitals. Both facilities will replace inpatient units at Centra Virginia Baptist Hospital.

Centra is also working on Centra Lynchburg General (LGH) parking, tower, and wayfinding enhancements.

  • Wayfinding Enhancements: In August, Centra completed updates to LGH’s room numbering and tower designations. These modifications aim to improve navigation across the LGH campus, enhancing the experience for patients, visitors, and Caregivers. Permanent signage that incorporates regional themes selected by Caregivers and the community and reflects the updated numbering system is expected to be installed in the next year.
  • Parking Expansions: To accommodate the growing LGH campus, new parking spaces have been added, including areas equipped with EV charging stations. Additionally, a new patient and visitor parking area is projected to open in the spring of 2025.
