HALIFAX COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — The Halifax County Sheriff’s Office has made an arrest in the death of Emma Compton Layne.
She was killed in June 2017.
November 27, Sheriff Fred Clark announced that her husband, Russell Wayne Layne, was arrested and charged with murder.
The 67-year-old Nathalie resident is being held without bond at the Blue Ridge Regional Jail.
“This case has been a top priority for the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office since day one and we remain committed to seeking justice for Emma and her family,” the Sheriff said on Facebook. “This tragic event has deeply affected our community, and our thoughts and prayers continue to be with the family of Emma Layne. We hope that this arrest will bring some measure of closure to Emma Layne’s family and loved ones.”
Sheriff Clark, who was in office when Layne was killed, also thanked Virginia State Police, the Halifax County Commonwealth’s Attorney, and the community for their help in the case.
