ALLEGHANY COUNTY, Va. — Alleghany County volunteer firefighter Steve A. Weikle died at the age of 70 on February 13 after responding to a structure collapse earlier in the day.
The Boiling Springs Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department responded to reports of a structure collapse on Thursday that trapped several farm animals.
No firefighters were injured removing the animals from the collapsed building but Weikle, who had actively participated in the call, was found in cardiac arrest outside of his home shortly after.
Since the medical emergency happened within 24 hours of running a call, the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation considers the death to have taken place in the line of duty.
Weikle, who served the Boiling Springs Volunteer Fire Department for 49 years, will be laid to rest with full fire department honors.
According to the department, a funeral will be held on Tuesday, February 18 at 1 p.m. at the First Christian Church in Covington.
