From beautiful views of the mountains to restaurants and coffee shops and more, there are many towns to enjoy. TheTravel.com has recognized several towns in the region for their charming allure.
Here is a list of the charming towns worth visiting:
Floyd
Floyd is known for its bluegrass and old-time music with its hippie-friendly vibe. It’s also known for its iconic Floyd Country Store and offers outdoor adventures.
Fincastle
Fincastle goes back to the 1770s and homes 50 historic structures with its history and small-town feel. Some buildings also are built in the Greek Revival style making it a perfect year-round destination.
Buchanan
Buchanan is known for its views of the Peaks of Otter and charming Main Street. Many antique shops and historic storefronts charm the town of 1,000 residents. The Upper James River offers outdoor adventures along with the Buchanan Theater to watch movies or live performances. The name of the town comes from Virginia colonist John Buchanan.
Rocky Mount
Rocky Mount is named after a cliff in town while offering visitors and residents food, drinks, art, and music. Rocky Mount is known as America’s East Coast Mountain Capital, and its history, culture, music venues, and art scene. Live music can be experienced at the Harvester Performance Center along with the Artisan Center and The Crooked Road to offer visitors souvenirs and art pieces. Rocky Mount also offers moon shine as Franklin County is known as the “Moonshine Capital of the World.” Twin Creeks Distillery is the hot spot in town.
Bedford
Bedford is known for its nickname the “World’s Best Little Town” as it sits at the foot of the Peaks of Otter. It is a small Virginia town that is filled with summer fun. Bedford is also home to Smith Mountain Lake known for fishing, swimming, wakeboarding, and water skiing. It also houses the National D-Day Memorial on Main Street in its historic downtown area.
Vinton
The town of Vinton is known as a “bedroom” community in Roanoke with its small-town charm and outdoor adventures. It’s filled with cafes, restaurants, and shops for anyone to come visit. It’s also known for its Vinton War Memorial where LOVE letters and High Ground Veterans Monument can be found. The town also gives access to the Roanoke Valley Greenway and Tinker Creek Canoe Launch.
Abington
Abington is known for its history, culture in arts as it sits in the Blue Ridge Highlands. Main Street has many museums and galleries to showcase its history and culture while also celebrating Appalachian arts and crafts with the two-week-long Virginia Highlands Festival. The 1933 Barter Theatre is the longest-running professional theater in the U.S. to showcase live performances. Residents and visitors can visit surrounding landscapes and explore nature.
Pulaski
Pulaski is a small town with many picture-like attractions and historic landmarks. Pulaski showcases scenic landscapes in the New River Valley along with its landmarks and historic sites. It is located within the Draper Mountain of the Blue Ridge Mountains. It is filled with historic landmarks such as the Pulaski Theatre and the 1908 Christ Episcopal Church.
